Supporting Tribal Coffee Farmers Livelihoods

(Project under the TRANSFORM programme funded by Unilever and FCDO)

Terra Ecopreneurs_TRANSFORM (1).png

This ongoing TRANSFORM project strengthens tribal and marginal coffee and black pepper producers in Karnataka by connecting them directly to commercial market demand, driving sustainable livelihoods and eco-friendly farming practices.

Core Components

Market Alignment: The project supports producers in meeting exact buyer specifications across four primary dimensions:

  • Quality: Enhancing intrinsic crop characteristics through tailored ecosystem and variety management.

  • Quantity: Aggregating farm produce to supply consistent volumes required by buyers.

  • Identity: Adopting regenerative agriculture, clean production methods, and strict environmental and social compliance.

  • Delivery: Streamlining supply chain logistics to ensure reliable and timely product delivery.

Business Networks: Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) form strategic partnerships with commercial coffee and spice entities, government bodies, and non-profits. These linkages provide technical support, infrastructure, input access, and entry into promising commercial markets.

Value Proposition: Member-farmers receive quality inputs, extension services, and equitable governance structures. Simultaneously, commercial supply chains secure a reliable, traceable supply of sustainably produced, high-grade coffee and black pepper.

Key Activities: Field operations focus on practical capacity building and quality control:

  • Conducting farmer training in scientific cultivation and post-harvest handling.

  • Supplying subsidized, high-quality seedlings to replenish sub-optimal plant populations.

  • Distributing biofertilizers, decomposers, and bioagents to minimize chemical dependence.

  • Establishing/Modernizing post-harvest infrastructure, such as tarpaulin sheets and pepper deconing units, to reduce crop loss.

  • Handholding FPOs to differentiate produce and navigate commercial sales.

Resource Structure: Cluster-level field teams (mapped to partner FPOs) and a Project Coordinator manage project activities with technical training from the Coffee Board and Spices Board. External partner organizations contribute aligned non-cash investments for holistic community development.

Strategic Impact for TE

The initiative directly advances TE’s mission of environmental and social sustainability. By validating this market-driven model, TE establishes a scalable launchpad to design similar revenue-

generating interventions across diverse producer groups and commodity value chains.

The Indian coffee sector is not just lush landscapes, plush villas, homestays and global lifestyles. About a fourth of India's coffee growing area is cultivated by tribal communities in forests and forest fringes. While some tribal coffee clusters have benefitted from private and public programmes, most tribal growers continue to depend on intermediaries and local supply chains. Terra Ecopreneurs has been working with tribal coffee growers to improve the tribal farms' productivities and product quality by forming/engaging with FPOs, and to integrate these communities/organizations with formal coffee supply chains.

With coffee prices being strongly derived from key indices of quality, Terra Ecopreneurs engaged with Brownbean Artistry, a Bangalore-based professional coffee consultancy firm, to evaluate the quality of the coffee grown by select beneficiaries of the TRANSFORM project. At Brownbean's facility, coffee fruits provided by the farmers were processed using various specialty coffee processing techniques and the outcomes assessed using the SCA methodology. Subsequently, inputs were provided to the producers on opportunities to improve product quality through modifications in pre-harvest and post-harvest operations.

Terra Ecopreneurs has been engaged with Biligiri Soligas Producer Company Limited, BR Hills, Chamarajanagar District, Karnataka, to promote sustainable coffee cultivation, processing and trade. This company has, over the years, grown to emerge as one of the most successful FPOs in Karnataka. With 423 tribal shareholders, the FPO has been able to make its mark by aggregating the coffee of its members, and entering into direct sales with established exporters. This year too, Terra Ecopreneurs supported the FPO to find buyers and negotiate the commercial terms. The TRANSFORM project of Terra Ecopreneurs has also recently signed a MoU with the FPO to jointly carry out activities for the continued progress of coffee farmers in BR Hills.

On 22nd January 2026, Terra Ecopreneurs (TE) signed a MoU with Girisiri Sanjeevini Mahila Producer Company Limited based in Chikkamagalur, Chikkamagalur District, Karnataka. The MoU signing event was graced by the presence of Ms. Sujatha, Programme Director, KSRLM, and other representatives of the FPO and the District/Taluk administation. The FPO, supported by the Government of Karnataka, has 1000 women members (small and marginal farmers) as its shareholders, and its activities are implemented through a network of krishi sakhis who are based in the clusters of coffee production. In tune with the TRANSFORM programme's focus on empowering women-owned startups, the TRANSFORM project of Terra Ecopreneurs hopes to work effectively with this FPO to promote scientific and modern methods of coffee and black pepper cultivation, processing and trade, thereby resulting in a growth in household incomes. TE will organize capacity building programmes for the FPO's members, and arrange for supply of modern inputs while also exploring the opportunities for collective marketing of the members' coffee and black pepper.

On 8th February 2026, representatives of Girisiri Mahila Farmer Producer Company Limited, Chikkamagalur, were trained in various topics related to coffee quality and value addition. The participants also learnt the various techniques of coffee roasting, brewing and quality parameters. Terra Ecopreneurs is thankful to The Node, Bangalore, for conducting this training programme at their modern roasting unit.

On 9th February 2026, Terra Ecopreneurs (TE) signed a MoU with Mudigere Mahila Farmer Producer Company Limited based in Mudigere, Chikkamagalur District, Karnataka. The FPO has about 280 women members as its shareholders. The TRANSFORM programme has a strong focus on empowering women-owned startups, and this engagement of Terra Ecopreneurs with the women-owned company is a step in this direction. All the 280 women shareholders of this FPO are involved in coffee and black pepper production. The Company has hitherto operated a nursery and supplied farm inputs. TE will organize capacity building programmes for the FPO's members, and arrange for supply of modern inputs while also exploring the opportunities for collective marketing of the members' coffee and black pepper.
