Two-Stage Evaporative Cooling AHU: Sustainable Industrial Air Handling

Industrial facilities requiring continuous fresh air often face high electricity bills from conventional vapor-compression air handlers. The Two-Stage Evaporative Air Handling Unit (AHU) combines Indirect Evaporative Cooling (IDEC) with Direct Evaporative Cooling (DEC) to achieve up to 86% energy savings compared to standard air-cooled chillers.

How Two-Stage Evaporative Cooling Works

  • Stage 1: Indirect Evaporative Cooling (IDEC): Hot ambient air passes through a specialized polypropylene plate heat exchanger featuring moisture-wicking natural fiber sheets. A secondary air stream cools the heat exchanger surfaces, sensible cooling the main air stream without adding any moisture.

  • Stage 2: Direct Evaporative Cooling (DEC): The pre-cooled air moves through wetted Celdek cooling pads. Controlled water evaporation further reduces dry-bulb temperature down to target levels while maintaining safe humidity levels.

Key System Components

  • EC Plus Axial Fans: Direct-drive permanent magnet motors eliminate belt friction losses, delivering precise airflow via VFD speed control.

  • Dual Submersible Pumps: Duty/standby pump configuration provides redundancy for continuous wet-pad operation.

  • UV-C Water Purification: Cleans recirculated water to prevent algae, bacterial growth, and media clogging.

  • PLC Automated Control: Continuously adjusts fan speeds and pump operation based on real-time ambient and indoor psychrometric sensors.
